PediaVision®: Innovative Technology Solutions for Vision Screening

One out of every four children in the U.S. suffers from some vision problem. This includes 7.7 million children under the age of 11. With early detection, 95% of these problems can be corrected.

PediaVision® is a services company providing advanced technology for pediatric vision screening. The company enables a fully objective vision assessment of children beginning as early as six months of age. Based in Lake Mary, Florida, PediaVision’s® market encompasses more than 60 million children in the United States.

More than 27 million Americans of all ages currently suffer from some level of vision impairment. It is estimated that 25% of school-age children suffer from vision problems. The economic impact is more than $51 billion in direct and indirect costs.

Pediavision® brings a proven technology with medical expertise and a management team with a strong track record of transforming industries. The company was initially founded in 2002 by a team of optometrists and ophthalmologists. These medical professionals were confronted daily with the impact of permanent vision loss in children. With early detection, many of these vision problems could have been prevented. PediaVision® was created to address this critical issue.

“The genesis of PediaVision®, which was founded by eye care physicians, was to provide the pediatricians and family practitioners who are the gatekeepers of children’s health with a fast, simple and accurate way to catch vision problems early, when they are most curable,” said David Melnik, CEO, PediaVision®. “However, achieving that goal takes more than breakthrough technology and medical acumen. It also requires expertise and experience to build a business that can scale to support thousands of physicians and millions of patients.”

Mr. Melnik brings a unique background to PediaVision®. He is well-known for his accomplishments as the founder and CEO of Kinetics, Inc., which is credited with transforming the way airlines do business by introducing the kiosk self-service technology that has become ubiquitous in today’s travel industry.

Melnik has applied many of the lessons learned at Kinetics to PediaVision®. The most important is the transformative power of providing physicians with convenient access to an innovative technology capable of addressing a critical need among their pediatric patient population.

“At PediaVision®, our focal point is on ensuring that all our customers – the children, parents and physicians – receive value from what we are doing,” he said.

The breakthrough technology comes from PediaVision’s® partnership with Plusoptix, the German manufacturer of an infrared camera that combines auto-refractive and video-retinoscopy. The result is the PediaVision® Assessment Solution, “PAS”, which is non-invasive, easy-to-use, simple to deploy and designed to help resolve today’s vision screening dilemma.

While the child sits in their parent’s lap, a digital photograph is taken from a few feet away. The child’s vision is automatically assessed in as little as five seconds and provides an instant “pass” or “refer” result. The PAS is capable of conducting a highly accurate screening on children as young as six months. The ability to accurately check both eyes simultaneously makes this technology a necessary addition to any pediatrician’s office.

PediaVision® has made this vision screening technology widely available. The company’s PediaVision® Assessment Solution (PAS) is highly accurate, non-invasive and is easy to use. The PAS is highly effective for children of all ages and remarkably productive in screening pre-verbal children.

To govern the ongoing medical efficacy of the PAS, the company has appointed a Medical Advisory Board made up of leading doctors of pediatric ophthalmology, ophthalmology and optometry. This team of medical professionals provides ongoing advice and guidance on vision problems for pediatricians, charities and schools embarking on vision screening programs.

“Our primary goal is to prevent blindness in children. We want to enable pediatricians to easily screen for potential vision problems so that no child will suffer life-long vision loss or impairment,” said Stephen Arnold, O.D., Pediavision® Medical Advisory Board member and co-founder of Pediavision®.

“Our mission is to eliminate major vision loss in thousands of children. By making it possible to safely and effectively screen millions of children, we are doing just that.” said CEO Melnik.
